DUPREE'
Our community can look forward to hearing a special pair of musicians this month. Female vocalists Casselberry-Dupree will be performing June 8, at 8 p.m. in Strosacker Auditorium on the Case Western Reserve' University campus. They are being presented by Oven Productions in cooperation with CWRU's Women's Center and Afro-American Society.
The musical style of these women has been described in many ways, as they are not easily categorized.
The Village Voice speaks highly of their powerfully captivating spirit and "acustic rasta-feminism" sound. It's easy to see how Casselberry's baritone/alto and Dupree's contralto/soprano could capture one's ear and soul as they sing contemporary spirituals along with renditions of material by the Kinks, Patti LaBelle, and Bob Marley.
This ability to captivate audiences has been proven by the times they have played extremely varied audiences,
ranging from 50 to 250,000 people.
For those of you unfamiliar with the sound of Casselberry-Dupree, here is the reaction of a more widely known singer/songwriter, Holly Near: "I was at a rally--it was raining. I was tired and wanted to go home. Then I heard these two voices soaring--harmonies warming my bones, words lifting my spirits. It was Casselberry-Dupree and going home had to wait!"
Tickets for the concert are $7 in advance, and $8 at the door. For those needing more information, or interested in the free child care offered that evening or in work exchange, may call Oven Productions. The number is 321-3054, Monday through Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
This quote by J. Casselberry sums up wht one can expect from these two talented women that evening: "Our music comes from the places we've been as Black women in America. We want to sing, we want to be heard, we want you to listen......
